Ember Hollow: best starting class and beginner build
New to Ember Hollow? Here's which class to pick, where to spend your first levels and which early weapons are worth hunting down.
Ember Hollow can be brutal for newcomers, but the right starting choices make the first 10 hours much smoother. This guide covers the best class for beginners, how to spend your early levels and three weapons you can grab in the first area.
Best starting class: Warden
If this is your first game of this kind, pick the Warden. Here’s why:
- Shield parry has a generous timing window, so you can block almost anything early on
- Highest starting Vigor, so you can survive mistakes while learning boss patterns
- Slow heat buildup, so you’re less likely to overheat and stagger yourself
The Ashblade does more damage, but it punishes mistakes much harder.
Where to spend your first 10 levels
| Level | Stat | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Vigor | More health is the best defense while you learn |
| 5–7 | Endurance | More stamina means more blocks and dodges |
| 8–10 | Strength | Unlocks the Bellbreaker Hammer (see below) |
Don’t spread points across every stat. Focused builds get stronger much faster.
3 early weapons worth finding
1. Bellbreaker Hammer
Found in the bell tower above the Collapsed Chapel. Climb the broken stairs, drop onto the beam and follow it to the corpse at the end. Its charged attack breaks enemy guards instantly.
2. Cinder Spear
Sold by the Wandering Smith once you reach the Hollow Market. It has long reach and builds heat slowly, which makes it great for cautious players.
3. Pilgrim’s Lantern-Shield
Hidden behind an illusory wall in the Drowned Crypt. Hit the wall next to the third coffin. It lights dark areas and blocks, so you get two tools in one slot.
Quick tips for your first hours
- Rest at every shrine you find. They’re also fast-travel points.
- Let your weapon cool. Watch the glow on your blade, because bright orange means you’re about to overheat.
- Open every gate. Shortcuts are the game’s biggest reward.
- Don’t fight the Choir Mother early. She’s optional until much later. Come back at level 30 or above.
