Starfall Colony: 10 tips to survive your first winter

Winter wipes out more colonies than raiders do. These 10 tips will keep your settlers fed, warm and sane until spring.

In Starfall Colony, your first winter arrives on day 24, and it’s the moment most new colonies collapse. Food runs out, generators freeze and morale crashes. Follow these 10 tips and you’ll make it to spring with a stronger colony than you started with.

Before winter (days 1–20)

1. Plant crops by day 5

Nutroot grows in 9 days and stores for 60. Plant at least two fields per settler before day 5 so you get two full harvests before the frost hits.

2. Build a cold store, not a warehouse

Food in a regular warehouse spoils in about 15 days. A cold store, unlocked with the first research node, keeps it for 90. It’s the single most important building before winter.

3. Stockpile three times the fuel you think you need

Generators burn fuel much faster below –10°C. A good rule is 40 fuel per heated building for the whole winter.

4. Research insulation first

Skip weapons research early. Insulated Walls cut heat loss by 35% and pay for themselves within one cold snap.

During winter (days 24–48)

5. Shrink your colony’s footprint

Turn off heating in storage rooms and workshops you don’t need. Move beds into one shared bunkhouse and you’ll heat one building instead of five.

6. Watch the “Chilled” status

A settler with the blue snowflake icon is losing health. Send them to a heated room immediately. Ignoring it for more than a day leads to illness.

7. Keep morale up with hot meals

Cooked stew gives +10 morale, while raw food gives –5. Assign one settler to cook full-time during winter.

8. Pause expeditions

Expeditions in winter take twice as long and settlers often come back frostbitten. Keep everyone home.

Emergency tips

9. Scrap luxury furniture for fuel

In a pinch, you can deconstruct decorations and furniture for 2 to 5 fuel each. It costs morale, but it’s better than a frozen generator.

10. Save before day 24

Make a manual save right before winter starts. If your first winter goes badly, you can reload and try again with these lessons. There’s no shame in it in a game this unforgiving.

Winter checklist

  • At least 2 food fields per settler
  • Cold store built
  • 40 fuel per heated building
  • Insulated Walls researched
  • Manual save on day 23

Good luck, colonist. Spring is closer than it looks.
