Neon Drift Syndicate review: style for days, depth for hours

This arcade racer looks incredible and feels great to drive, but its career mode runs out of road too soon.

Neon Drift Syndicate wants you to feel cool, and for the first few hours it absolutely succeeds. You tear through a rain-soaked, neon-lit city at 200 mph, chaining drifts around corners while a pounding synthwave track builds to a drop. It’s pure arcade joy.

Drifting is everything

The handling model is the star. Tap the brake going into a turn and your car swings out into a long, controllable slide. Hold the drift and you build Charge, which you can spend on a boost or save to fill your Syndicate meter for a special move. Learning to string drifts together across an entire track is deeply satisfying.

Where it stalls

The career mode follows your rise through four rival crews, and it’s over in about eight hours. After that, you’re left with time trials, online races and a progression system that unlocks new cars very slowly unless you buy currency packs. It’s not predatory, but it’s noticeable.

The AI is another issue. On the hardest difficulty, rivals catch up in ways that feel unfair, and losing on the last corner to a car that was impossibly far behind gets old fast.

Local multiplayer saves the day

Split-screen for up to four players is where Neon Drift Syndicate really shines. On Switch 2, it held a solid 60 fps in two-player mode and stayed smooth enough with four. It’s the perfect couch party game.

The verdict

If you want a gorgeous arcade racer to play with friends, Neon Drift Syndicate is easy to recommend. Solo players looking for a long career may want to wait for a sale.

7.5
